So how does ICS work?

Helping churches grow
Alongside managing the recruitment of ministers ('chaplains' as Anglican ministers are known overseas) for established and new Anglican churches our work as a mission agency involves Helping the churches we partner develop their mission and ministry to people who speak English e.g. through help with evaluating culture and context, evaluating opportunities for outreach, providing advice and analysis, resources, prayer support, people and funding for mission initiatives. If an existing chaplaincy has potential to grow, but lacks the resources to do so, we can help by providing a full-time chaplain. Since 1995 we have done this in France, Poland, Germany, Cyprus and the Czech Republic.

Planting new churches
Since 1995 we have helped plant several new churches in places as diverse as France (where several new congregations have been planted by the two new churches), Germany, Ukraine, Belgium and Northern Cyprus.
We do this by

  • Researching (in co-operation with the Diocese) locations where there is potential for new biblically-based English-language ministry. This might be where there is as yet no church ministering in English, or where the establishment of an Anglican church would be a positive contribution to English-language ministry in the area, and help the other local churches reach visitors to that country or town.
  • Appointing and funding the chaplains for these new churches.

Our aim is always to encourage and support viable churches which will in time be able to afford to employ their own minister.

Seasonal ministry
We help care for the spiritual needs of holidaymakers in well over twenty European and Mediterranean holiday resorts through providing seasonal chaplains who work for ICS unpaid for periods of two to seven weeks. We recruit and train around 100 such seasonal chaplains a year. Churches Abroad lists (during holiday seasons) the locations and times of these church services for tourists.

We help you…and your friends
Our Directory of English-speaking Churches Abroad, produced by a dedicated team of volunteers, can help you, your family or people in your congregation to find English-speaking churches abroad. The Directory lists ICS-supported churches, and other Protestant churches from a variety of Christian traditions. Why not buy one for your church and help your congregation members find fellowship abroad?
