These lyrics can be traced back to the first story found in the Bible. Each egg is a day in creation, a time when the world was ‘hatched’ or formed by God.

God created everything in six 24-hour periods.

'And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.'

Genesis 1:5 (see also Genesis 1:8, 13, 19, 23, 31)

'For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.'

Exodus 20:11

Day 1 — light and time (Gen 1:3-5);

Day 2 — the sky and 'separated' waters (Gen 1:6-8);

Day 3 — dry ground, bodies of water, and plants (Gen 1:9-13);

Day 4 — the sun, moon, stars, and planets (Gen 1:14-19);

Day 5 — fish and birds (Gen 1:20-23);

Day 6 — land animals and humans (Gen 1:24-302:7,15-25).

On the seventh day God rested from his work (Genesis 2:2-3).
