Pilgrimage in Turkey
St John’s Izmir were delighted to host a pilgrimage group of seventy people who were in Türkiye to celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. The group was led by Metropolitan Nikitas (Orthodox Archbishop of the UK), and Bishop Richard Chartres (former Anglican Bishop of London). Dr Robert Innes of the Diocese in Europe was also part of the pilgrimage.
Bishop Robert presided and preached at the Eucharist on Sunday (4 May), during which he bestowed the title of ‘Canon’ on Fr James. The pilgrims told us how much they enjoyed worshipping with us, and we greatly enjoyed meeting them. The pilgrimage was arranged by the Anglican and Eastern Churches Association, a British society which exists to promote friendship, mutual understanding and respect among the churches.
